With the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, celebrating 70 years on the throne, just around the corner, it's worth reminding ourselves of the beautiful, adventurous and historic countries that are connected via the Commonwealth, that have all been visited by the Queen.

The British monarch is head of the Commonwealth. In some Commonwealth countries the Queen symbolically holds the highest office as the head of state. There are 54 countries that are linked to the UK through the Commonwealth that are spread across the world. Whilst some of these destinations are far away and exotic, there are some that are much closer to home.

Able2Travel Travel Insurance provides information and inspiration on the three Commonwealth countries that should definitely be considered for your next holiday abroad.

1. Malta

With over 300 days of sunshine, Malta is the ultimate year-round holiday destination, Especially with those aged 50+ due to the short flight time from the UK and the mild but comfortable temperatures during their winter months.

Malta has a lot to offer travellers of all age ranges and budgets from the activities on offer, the weather, the vibrant night-life and the beautiful beaches to name just a few.

Depending on your health and physical capabilities, Malta can provide a variety of sporting and leisure activities such as hiking, mountain hiking and scuba diving. Most of the larger hotels and resorts also offer light leisure activities such as swimming and tennis courts, which comes in handy if you want to stay active during your holiday.

The island also has a rich history from WWII if you are interested in expanding your knowledge and learning more about the local history on your trip. During the war, Malta became the most bombed country in the world, with over 14,000 bombs dropped on the island. The outstanding WWII history means there are plenty of points of interest to experience Malta’s involvement first-hand.

If history doesn't pique your interests, then the Maltese are world renowned for their craft making as well as their versatile cuisine. The food in Malta takes a little from Italy, a pinch from North Africa and a twist of Spanish flair, a true culinary reflection of the history of the islands itself.

Weather in Malta can reach up to 30 degrees during the summer months and a very comfortable 20 degrees in the winter months, making it the perfect destination all year round.

2. Cyprus

From being home to some of the world’s most historic sites to the vibrant Mediterranean culture, the charms of Cyprus make it an undeniably irresistible destination for older tourists.

Cyprus enjoys mild winters, long summers and short autumn and spring periods. This typical Mediterranean climate is attractive, especially to UK tourists wishing to escape bad weather during their cold, harsh winter months. There are generally at least six hours of sunshine, even in the middle of winter, giving visitors a pleasant climate all year round. Perfect!

The history of Cyprus dates back more than 10,000 years and if you are keen on learning the history of the island, the first stop on your trip should be the Cyprus Museum which is situated in the capital, Nicosia. The museum has a vast collection of artefacts dating back to Neolithic and Byzantine age. Cyprus also offers access to the ancient Greek ruins like Amathus and Korion in Limassol and old Turkish mosques.

The food is also something not to be missed. So on your trip, ensure you make the most of indulging yourself in the local cuisines and delicacies. Cyprus is situated at a crossroad of three continents – as a result, its cuisine is a mixture of Southern European, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian influences.

Weather in Cyprus can reach up to 33 degrees during the summer months and a very comfortable 18 degrees in the winter months. The ideal destination whether you can handle the heat or not.

3. Barbados

If you are willing to go further afield, another enticing island on the list is Barbados which has some very British inspired favourite past times, but with much better weather! Barbados is around an 8 hour flight from London Heathrow,

The country's national sport is cricket which is usually followed by afternoon tea - a very iconic British affair.

As with the other destinations, you mustn't miss out on the vast array of delicious Caribbean cuisine. From street food to fine dining, Barbados will smash every expectation and of course being an island in the middle of the ocean, it offers the freshest seafood. Whether you are looking for a laid-back getaway or an activity filled holiday, Barbados is a great choice for a holiday. If exploring is your thing, get active by discovering local caves, surfing, swimming and hiking in the natural beauty of the island's offerings. Enjoy luxurious, relaxing Caribbean beaches, sunbathe with year-round sunshine and discover this dazzling tropical island through its nature, culture and welcoming yet laid back spirit.
